です、だ

Meaning: to be, is

です is a polite expression that describes what it is and what it looks like ( assertive expression ).

です is often attached after a noun, いadj and なadj stem in the end of a sentence.

だ is used in a informal situation and is not attached after いadj.

Examples

私はさとうです。/　私はさとうだ。

わたしは さとうです。/　わたしは さとうだ。

I am Sato.

エレナは学生です。/ エレナは学生だ。

エレナは がくせいです。/ エレナは がくせいだ。

Elena is a student.

チョコレートは甘いです。/ チョコレートは甘い。

チョコレートは あまいです。/ チョコレートは あまい。

The chocolate is sweet.

公園は静かです。/ 公園は静かだ。

こうえんは しずかです。/ こうえんは しずかだ。

The park is quiet.
