さん is a suffix that indicates the speaker’s / writer’s politeness towards someone.

Example

あの方はスミスさんです。

あのかたは スミスさんです。

That’s Mr. Smith.

スミスさんは学生ですか。

スミスさんは がくせいですか。

Are you a student, Mr. Smith?

いいえ、会社員です。

いいえ、かいしゃいんです。

No, he works for a company.

The word あなた isn’t generally used if the speaker knows the listener’s name.

あなた is used to address someone with whom one is very familiar, such as one’s husband, romantic partner, etc.
