得る（うる、える）
Meaning: can, possible, ~able
Formation
Verb ます form + 得る
Examples
災害はいつでも起こり得る。
さいがいは いつでも おこりうる。
Natural disasters can occur at any time.
人口の減少が続くことはあり得る。
じんこうの げんしょうが つづくことは ありえる。
It is possible that the population decline will continue.
彼はとても真面目な人だ。クビになるなんてあり得ない。
かれは とてもまじめなひとだ。クビになるなんて ありえない。
He is a hard worker. So he can never get fired.
あの選手が優勝することは想像し得る。
あのせんしゅが ゆうしょうすることは そうぞうしうる。
I can imagine that player will win.
若手社員でも、管理職になり得る。
わかてしゃいんでも、かんりしょくに なりえる。
Even young employees can become managers.
業務改善のため、考え得る全てのことをやってみましょう。
ぎょうむかいぜんのため、かんがえうる すべてのことを やってみましょう。

The basic conjugation pattern is as follows.
起こり［え］ない
起こり［え］ます
起こり［うる / える］
起こり［うれ］ば
起こり［え］よう
起こり［え］て
起こり［え］た
うる / える has the meaning of the existence of possibility.
So it cannot be used in a sentence that expresses pure ability as follows.
×彼は日本語を話し得る。
〇彼は日本語を話せる。
〇彼は日本語を話すことができる。
He can speak Japanese.
