きり
Meaning and formation
①only
Number + counter + （っ）きり
②since
Verb た form + たきり / たっきり
This phrase expresses that no condition has changed after an action or an incident happened.
③つきっきり、かかりっきり
These phrases are used to express someone's single-minded devotion to an action, which makes it impossible for him to do anything else.
Examples①
一人きりで食事をするのは寂しいです。
ひとりきりで しょくじをするのは さびしいです。
It is lonely to eat alone.
人生は一度きりです。だから楽しむべきです。
じんせいは いちどきりです。だからたのしむべきです。
Life is only once, so you should enjoy it.
彼と二人きりで話がしたい。
かれと ふたりきりで はなしがしたい。
I want to talk with him alone.
遅刻が許されるのは一度きりだよ。
ちこくがゆるされるのは いちどきりだよ。
If you are late again, you will not be forgiven.

父はスペインに行ったきり、戻ってこない。
ちちは スペインに いったきり、おぼえていない。
My dad hasn't come back since he went to Spain.
２年前に実家に帰ったきり、ずっと帰っていない。
にねんまえに じっかにかえったきり、ずっと かえっていない。
I went to my parents' house 2 years back and didn't return since after that.
大学の友達と、卒業したきり会っていない。
だいがくのともだちと、そつぎょうしたきり あっていない。
I haven't met my college friends since I graduated.
彼はけがをして、寝たきりになってしまった。
かれは けがをして、ねたきりになってしまった。
He was bedridden since being injured.

風邪をひいた息子を、つきっきりで看病した。
かぜをひいたむすこを、つきっきりでかんびょうした。
I took care of my son who had a cold all the time.
佐々木さんはこのプロジェクトにかかりっきりだから、飲み会に参加しないだろう。
ささきさんは このプロジェクトに かかりっきりだから、のみかいに さんかしないだろう。
Mr. Sasaki has been occupied in this project, so he will not be in a drinking party.
