これ、それ、あれ

これ、それ and あれ are demonstrative pronouns, and used properly according to the distance to the referent.

これ is used for things near the speaker.

あれ is used for things near the listener.

それ is used for things distant from both the speaker and listener.

Examples

これはわたしの本です。

これは わたしのほんです。

This is my book.

あれは だれのかばんですか。

Whose bag is that?

それはチョコレートですか。

それは チョコレートですか。

Is that a chocolate?
