そうです is often used in conversations.

In a noun sentence, the word そう is often used to give an affirmative answer.

The use of はい、そうです is limited to a reply to an identity question that requires a Yes / No answer.

Examples

それは　チョコレートですか。

Is that a chocolate?

はい、そうです。

Yes, it is.

そう is not usually used when answering a question in the negative.

To reply negatively to a Yes/No question, いいえ、ちがいます can be used.

それは　チョコレートですか。

いいえ、ちがいます。

No, it isn't.

それはラジオですか。

Is that a radio?

いいえ、カメラです。

No, it's a camera.
