Winston Wright - Selection
Winston and Jackie Mittoo battled it out on the keyboards throughout the reggae era. Who could get the best sounds and biggest hits out of the Hammond B3 organ.
Well Jackie got the albums - courtesy of Coxsone, it took many years before Bunny Lee stepped in and released a couple of Winston Wright sets.
Although his best work to be found here, for a wide range of producers is still not available in one place.
From Duke Reid, to Lee Perry, from Alvin Ranglin to Harry Mudie, from Sir JJ to Prince Buster.
Winston touched keys for all of them, Of course
the exception would be Coxsone and Studio One, but even that is very possible.
His big hit unaccredited of course is ‘Liquidator’ for Harry J. For many people that instrumental is the sound of reggae! A major pop hit.
Its got everything - a great bass and drum, some fantastic picking guitar from Hux Brown and those wonderful big fat organ melody lines from Winston!!
Perhaps it’s the way Winston on keyboards and many other great musicians who made so many great hits - were treated, is the reason why the form is so neglected today.
