Peter Tosh - Legalise It - Virgin - 1976
When the Wailers broke up in the mid seventies, it really did seem like a bad thing. Yet would 'Natty Dread' from Bob, 'Blackheart Man' from Bunny and this set from Peter, have been made if the group had stayed together- All three are classic albums and reflect major differences in the way each artist looked at life. Bunny seemed to be the most in tuned to nature, Bob was the rebel, and with Peter, well it was a bit of both, plus a great interest in the darker side of life, represented here by 'No Sympathy'.
Peter Tosh - Arise Black Man - Trojan
Mr Tosh was the most militant of the Wailers. He also enjoyed playing keyboards and guitar, and probably bass as well. Although with people like Family Man and Bunny Wailers around he didn't have to bother. And what Peter didn't need to trouble, he never troubled!!!This set concentrates on his work with three producers, Leslie Kong, Bunny Lee, and Joe Gibbs. The bulk of this set comes from his work with Joe Gibbs, where he was making tunes like 'Maga Dog-and 'Them A Fe Get A Beatin-Backed by The Now Generation on rhythms, these tunes were big hits at the time and remain classic tunes today. Both tap into that folk/roots sound that Joe Higgs had been working for years. And it's no co-incidence that a few years later Peter would have a big hit with 'Stepping Razor- written by Joe Higgs. Also here are Peter's works on the keyboards. 'Crimson Pirate-produced by Bunny Lee is something else. While tunes like 'Pepper Seed-show that he had a talent for keyboards and a unique sound.
Peter Tosh -No Nuclear War -Parlophone -1988
The murder of Peter Tosh was really a major tragedy. For after years in the wilderness of rock music, he's finally made another great reggae album. A true classic, that everyone knew he could make. 'No Nuclear War' is a magnificent work, 8 powerful songs driven along by traditional reggae rhythms, containing only a dash of rock music. There are no compromises on the LP. Even the use of female harmonies is effectively done. Lyrically Peter recall past themes, Anti Apartheid, Herb, Vampires and Rastafari.
