I Kong - The Way It Is - VP
In the wake of albums from people like Pablo Moses and I Jah Man Levi,
came this set - it came out on Top Ranking back in 1978. Then it
sounded a bit over-produced and it still sounds a bit like today. I
Kong is a great singer/songwriter - but where sets like 'Revolutionary
Dream' and 'Haile I Hymn' got the balance of roots reggae to rock
instrumentation right - this album just went a bit to far. Usually
time makes things like this a bit better - but the rock guitar and
background vocals still sound a too rocky. Despite that its still a
good album, and the singing and songwriting from I Kong is excellent.
Hopefully someone will reissue his next album - 'Africa Calling' is a
much better set - produced by Gilly Dread.
