Bush Chemists – Light Up Your Chalice –
Dubhead
Dougie Wardrop's Conscious Sounds studio
in Hackney as long been a meeting place for
those with a love of dub and steppers.
Currently he's got nearly 50 productions
released. This set was one of his first.
A dub album of course – it rests alongside
those of people like Dub Judah, The
Disciples, and Keety Roots.
Its music made for the sound system. And is a
good reflection of where its made.
Waterhouse the home of King Tubby in the
seventies gained a reputation as being a very
violent place. That tension seeped into the
mixing of Tubby – and his team of engineers,
Jammy, Scientist, Chemist and so on.
Hackney is the front line between East
London and North London. And here you
find that same tension. You can feel it. And
can certainly hear it in the music of the Bush
Chemists.
Its not music for the weakheart. Its full of
sound FX and also features some great
melodica playing from Chazbo – the
apprentice engineer at Conscious Sounds.
You can't be a reggae studio without an
apprentice!
Some will say that UK Roots as not moved on
from the Eighties – but that is an unrealistic
expectation. It is what it is. Without no
apology!!!
