Eddie 'Tan Tan' Thornton - Musical Nostalgia For Today – Maccabees
Another trumpeter – one based in the UK who's also been around for a very long time!!!
You name it and Eddie's played with them either on stage or in the studio. And not just reggae stars!
Recorded around the early eighties at Chalk Farm its got a nice line up of musicians that includes Jackie Mittoo and Sonny Binns on keyboards, Jah Bunny – drums, George Ford and Bass – and Steve Gregory on sax.
Eddie draws on all kinds of reggae styles from Roots, Lovers Rock, Steppers – he also successfully blends in Afro and Disco. Something that's been tried before – but never as good as this.
'Theme From A Summer Place' is probably the hit from this album. One of the tunes – that is a real puzzle – melodies and bass lines (College Rock) blend together making it very hard to work out its origins.
Yet Eddie gives it a work out. My favourite tune on the album as got the least inspiring title 'Disco Style Reggae'
It's got a 'Far East' style bass line that Phil Chen came up with. And which was used at its very best on 'Judah Eskender Tafari's 'Jah Light' tune for Studio One.
