Negril - Klik
Eric Gale worked on a couple of albums at least while he was in Jamaica. The Joe Higgs set ‘Life Of Contradiction’ and this set ‘Negril’, which he also produced.
The sound he went for was the Now Generation sound. Val Douglas and Keith Sterling who were both members of Now Gen are present, but that’s it.
Although people like Paul Douglas, Family Man, Peter Tosh and even Cedric Brooks and Joe Higgs can be found here.
Recorded at Harry J with Sylvan Morris at the controls. The production from Eric is full of Now Gen sounds.
By then the Now Gen band had broke up, so it’s possible that with ‘Negril’ Eric could see a way of building on the mighty foundation that Now Gen had laid.
Strong melodies with a light Jazz feel are built upon bass and drum rhythms that are as solid as rock. The title track is outstanding, and even the cover ‘I Shot The Sheriff’ is heavy.
It’s just a shame that Now Gen never got around to making a set like this. Still give thanks for this amazing album. It’s something very special.
