John Wayne – Boogie Down – Vista - 1983
John Wayne's heavy duty connections to Youth Promotion gave one a feeling that his debut album was going to come from that connection – but reggae is full of surprises and this was one of them. Step forward Striker Lee – in the early to mid eighties Bunny Lee was taking on Junjo and Phang and anyone else with sets of albums a lot of them come out on Vista. And this one is excellent – its got some great rhythms – very unusual recuts of tunes like 54-46. And John Wayne rode this rhythms with ease and great style. Not long after this – I think John was involved in an accident – so this set is his only one. Really sad.
