Leslie Butler - Ja Gan - Trojan
The Butlers of Jamaica are one of the big musical families. Leslie and Harold are perhaps the most known members.
Both are keyboard players and this set from Leslie is the first example of their talent.
The set is a connection to Joe White’s ‘Jah Jah Dub’ and features rhythms built by the Soul Syndicate band - Drums : Santa Davis, Bass : Fully Fullwood. Guitar : Albert Chin & Chinna, and Joe White on melodica.
Harry J’s production style brings out a different vibe from the band than say Niney, who liked
that raggaemuffin sound.
The sound here - just like on the Joe White set - is exploring what would become the rockers sound.
Engineer Sylvan Morris mixes up dub sounds with long instrumental passages.
What is remarkable is that Trojan released this set, but ignored the Joe White and the Morris in Dub set - all three of them would make a fantastic box set.
Credit must go to Harry J for coming up with a concept like this. It was a first for reggae music and has never been done since.
