Sal Navarette, Tony Chin - Pic Reggae Nucleas
Sal Navarette
The sad passing of Sal last Sunday - the 7th of September is yet another major loss for reggae literature.
In Sal’s case he was also a great musician, sometimes working with Ras Micheal and the Sons and Daughters of Negus. He was also a radio DeeJay.
I first came into contact with Sal, back in the late nineties, with the second series
Of Small Axe.
Sal was a big fan of Small Axe, and told me he had a great interview and article on Jah Bull, and was I interested in publishing it.
Jah Bull was always a great favourite at Small Axe HQ, and with his serious connections to Augustus Pablo and Rockers HiFi sound - any information on him was a must.
Of course I said yes. If it were just a page or two, I would have been well pleased.
What came in was a massive folder of written information and many fantastic photos and graphics.
Doing it all justice was my concern. Anyway Jah Bull went on the cover of Small Axe.
And when Sal, got his copies of that edition - he loved it!
All editions of Small Axe - are special. Each and every edition had some special memories.
This one was extra special. Sal sent me some copies of a Jah Bull CD - that he
Was trying to get released.
However these kind of projects are full of problems, and in the last email Sal not so long ago. It still bothered him, that he was unable to get the Jah Bull album released.
Even more stranger was that talking to Roy Cousins recently he told he had a few
Unreleased tracks with Jah Bull. And was a good friend of Jah Bull.
That would have been music to Sal’s ears. So perhaps - Sal, my good friend, there is hope yet. We shall see. Rest in Peace Sal. You did great works!!!
