Devon Russell - Prison Life – Wambesi - 1987
'Prison Life for producer Roy Cousins is another magnificent set. One where it can be heard that a lot of time and thought has been spent putting it together. If only more producers would expand their melodic range with the use of flute and harmonica. Some of the rhythms on the album are new and some come from earlier works. The important thing is that they are all good. And that foundtion is one that Devon sounds like he enjoys working on with his gentle voice and thoughtful lyrics.
Devon Russell – Jah Homebound Train – Classic – 1987
Around 1986, Devon Russell gave many reggae fans a smile when it was discovered that he had a LP released in Japan called 'Jah Homebound Train' produced by High Times. People had been waiting for years for an LP by him. Coxsone released his first 'Roots Music' a couple of years ago. Sadly many found it slighlty disappointing. It should have been a classic and it wasn't. This album is a lot better. All the songs are written by Devon and show him to be the gifted songwriter that he was always thought to be.
