Chosen Few - Hit After Hit - Trojan
Unlike groups like The Heptones, The Maytals
and so many more, The Chosen Few
enjoyed and excelled at the cover version.
The problem with this approach was finding
the right covers! The group enjoyed singing
cover versions of tunes from groups like The
Stylistics, The Delfonics and The Chi-Lites.
And it worked when the tunes were given
The Now Gen treatment. Those soft soul
tunes were given firm rhythms by Geoffrey
Chung and co.
Derrick Harriott and Prince Tony both
realized that it was a good combination for
everyone. Yet one of the outstanding tracks
on this set is a country tune, ‘Mexican
Divorce’.
Western vocal groups go back a long way -
and this tune is as old as the hills - but the
lyrics and harmonies are perfect for The
Chosen Few.
However the rest of this set is made up of
soul covers. ‘Everybody Plays The Fool’ works
the best and was a good hit for them in the
UK. Also in the frame is ‘Ebony Eyes’.
Hopefully the group will get around to
‘Home On The Range’. They have the vibes
for it!
