Boris Gardiner - Reggae Happening - Reggae Gold
Boris Gardiner’s career goes way back. By 1960 he was already in The Rhythm Aces, along with Richard Ace, Delano Stewart and Richard Moss. Other bands followed like Kes Chin and The Souvenirs and Carlos Malcolm’s Band it was with this band that he started to play the bass. The Broncos were his next band. By the time of the Reggae era he had formed the band The Boris Gardiner Happening. I
In 1969 Boris, recorded ‘Elizabethan Reggae’ with Junior Chung. A Dynamic Production when it was first released in the UK, it was credited to Byron Lee and The Dragonaires, thankfully that problem was soon sorted out
And Boris Gardeiner had a major inter-national hit on his hands!!
This album his first for the Dynamic label was the result. Recorded with people like Paul Douglas on drums, Hux Brown on guitar and
Keith Sterling on keyboard -it captures the reggae-vibes of the time very well.
It doesn’t include the hit, but that was a common policy at that time. But the set is still really good. The nine instrumentals cover a nice range of tunes - covers of ‘Lock Jaw’,
‘Barbwire’ and ‘Dynamic Pressure’ plus a nice traditional song ‘Commanding Wife’ sung very well by Boris.
