Mr T - from Dread Editions - https://www.dreadeditions.com/ kindly supplied this list...
Born Fi Dead, by Laurie Gunst
Eye-opening book about Jamaica and the effects of political corruption on the sufferers on their music. I was so proud when I translated it into English for DREAD Editions. Laurie is such a lovely and intelligent woman.
Bob Marley, by Stephen Davis
Haven’t read even ten per cent of the 401 books about Bob Marley! But this was the first one I read as a teenager. It lacks a bit of passion, but very informative.
Marley and Me, by Don Taylor
Half of the myth that had never been told—here again a certain truth behind the golden image. I also translated this one into French for DREAD Editions.
Race, Class and Political Symbols..., by Anita Waters
Very in-depth study. Crucial, especially when I wrote Reggae And Politics in the 1970s (DREAD Editions).
DUB, by Michael Veal
Very serious book about Dub—the author is a technician as well as an historian.
Rough Guide of reggae, by Steve Barrow and Peter Dalton
The most complete work about Jamaican music at the time. This book marked an entire generation of reggae lovers and writers.
A little bit basic book but I used to carry it me with in Jamaica as it was very helpful. The portraits are short but feature serious analysis.
Small Axe series
Am I being a little bit complacent here? Not really. This series of works give crucial landmarks.
Reggae Routes, by Kevin O’Brien Chang and Wayne Chen
A Jamaican perspective, with unusual comments. Another vision of reggae.
Le Premier Rasta, by Hélène Lee
Thorough researches to draw the portrait of the “first Rasta”—for the better and the worse. Explains many things from our favourite songs.
Negroe With a Hat, by Colin Grant
A page-turner biography—very well written. Not really about music, but you know...
In Fine Style: The Danchall Art of Wilfred Limonious, by Christopher Bateman and Al Fingers
So classy! Wonderful material, wonderful design. Red carpet treatment, as they would say.
DANCE HALL, by Beth Lesser.
The real thing, lyrically and visually.
Bob Marley, by Kim Gottlieb-Walker
Wonderful shots of Bob but also of the Wailers (including Peter) and many others.
The Matador, by Rich Opre Lowe
The symbol of a new trend in reggae books : people who lived the music telling their own story (here with the help of a writer, which is always better).
Edward Seaga, Autobiography.
Politics have influence reggae so much that this book teaches us a lot—in what Seaga says, in the way he says it, and in what he doesn’t say.
Bass Culture, by Lloyd Bradley.
Very good overview.
Jamaican Street Art
Okay, my own book—but these paintings are so powerful! I’m very proud of this book—I think some of these self-made artists deserve more support and recognition.
PEOPLE FUNNY BOY, by David Katz
Serious (auto)biography of the craziest producer—and in Jamaica, that means something.
Portrait of A Legend and Other Folks, by Lindsay Oliver Donald.
Nice pics and just like with Dennis Morris’ books, the real thing from real insider
