Don Drummond – Memorial Album – Trojan
The mighty Don Drummond did so much great work with so many producers during the ska era – but when it came down to it. It was Duke Reid that got the work to put together this magnificent set.
2 CDs that contain Don in all kinds of setting from upfront solo instrumentals. To a band member – playing his trombone on all the early hits of the day.
The set contains the first album featuring Winston Wright overdubs – probably one of the first occasions of the practice. If you love Winston Wright's organ work you won't have no problem with this – I certainly don't! So that's the first 12 tracks.
The next 12 tracks are the same tunes without the organ,
CD 2 contains an incredible of great tunes another 24 drawn from the Treasure Isle vaults.
Dotty and Bonnie's 'Dearest' is an amazing tune which features solos from Don and Lynn Taitt on guitar.
Also included is Marguerita's 'Woman A Come' – if you don't the story of this song – and what Marguerita's represented in Don's life just read Heather Augustyn magnificent book 'Don Drummond'. Although Laurence Cane-Honeysett sleevenotes to this CD are detailed and excellent.
Don Drummond was a genius and remains a legend.
