Junior English – Dynamic – Cactus
Being a big fan of Junior Delgado – its only recently occurred to me, that the very first time I had that vocal style – came not from Jux, but from Junior English!
His 'Back On The Scene' released on Trojan around 72 had everything you could want – a tough roots rhythm, and some truly raw vocals – and a great song. Even better it was recorded in the UK!
You didn't get many tunes like that back then, produced in the UK.
Other great tunes followed – 'Daddy's Home' came out on Ethnic, and then Pama had another great tune with 'Daniel'. One of the better examples of pop turned into reggae.
For his debut album though Junior turned to Cactus – and this is it. Its full of great rhythms all built in the UK – that are raw but at the same time gentle.
Junior's choice of songs is superb and his singing – mirrors his production style. Junior had success in the roots era, but it was nothing compared to his success in the late seventies.
