Bongo Herman – Master Drummer – Bongo Herman
Percussion as always played a great role in reggae music – be it ska – rock-steady – reggae and everything that as come after. From Count Ossie & MMR, to Sticky, Scully and this man Bongo Herman.
This CD only available direct from Bongo Herman in Jamaica – phone 876-989-2798 (just be nice) is gathering of recent tunes where Bongo goes in for a little bit of singing 'Gloria Darling' and a nice cover of 'I Admire You' these tunes are recent done within the last ten years.
Then along come the hits – starting with a jumbo sized hit. 'To Know Far I' which featured Bongo, Bingi and Les – and was produced by Derrick Harriott around 1971. A simple chant – but so well done.
Bongo hit big again a year or so later with 'African Breakfast' a version of Lorna Bennett's 'Breakfast In Bed' produced by Harry J and Geoffrey Chung at Harry J's. With the Now Generation on the rhythm track – Bongo had all he needed to create a masterpiece and he does!!! And someone came up a great title for the tune as well. The tune gained a release on Blue Mountain in this country.
Another favourite is 'Car Pound Drifter' produced by Harry Mudie over the 'Drifter' rhythm. A great cut to a great tune.
A mystery tune is 'King Of Drum' a afro jazz version of the 'Bum Ball' rhythm. It may be the first cut? "
