Maytones - Brown Girl In The Ring - Trojan
The popularity of the Pioneers with Gibbs and then with Leslie Kong, must have inspired a lot
of reggae vocal groups.
The Maytones a duo - Vernon Buckley and Gladstone Grant took the same idea of reggae country vocals sung in a very sincere way, and it works again.
There success probably came because unlike The Pioneers working with Beverleys who had such a clean sound. Whereas Alvin Ranglin, The Maytones producer on all these tracks. Had a much more rougher sound.
The themes of the songs were drawn from country life as well. ‘Billy Goat’ and ‘Donkey Face’ being a very good examples.
However the Maytones also sung about rasta as well ‘Bongo Man Rise’, ‘All Over The World People Are Changing’ the latter being a big hit for the group although not in the reggae era.
In the reggae era it was tunes like ‘Loving Reggae’ and ‘Funny Man’, that brought them success.
They even turned out some good pop covers in the same country style as well ‘Cecilia’ and ‘Black and White’ This 28 track set is an excellent introduction to a great vocal group
