Junior Dan – KTW Dub – 1982
Junior's first started playing bass in the early seventies. He's on Bob and Marcia's album 'Sweet Memories' and did a good portion of work with Augustus Pablo, being a member of the Rockers Band.
This debut album must have been recorded around that time sometime in the mid to late seventies. And features people like Albert Malawi and Max Edwards on drums, Dalton Brownie on guitar while Everton Carrington is featured on organ.
Everything else is Junior. The engineers on the album are Bullwackie (Lloyd Barnes) and Douglas Levy. Which would suggest that the album was at least mixed at Wackies. Recording sounds like it was done in Jamaica.
And what a great set it is!!! Only 7 tracks – but they all contained an inventiveness – that would be most welcome on other reggae instrumental albums.
The clarity in the bass and drum is one thing, but carefully constructed over the top are synth sounds of every description.
Pablo and Perry got some great synth sounds back in the seventies – but Junior Dan takes its much further! Its closest connection is the work that Jackie Mittoo did at Studio One. Melodies come and go – likewise with riffs. A great work!
