Don Carlos & Gold - Harvest Time - Negus Roots - 1982
Usual reggae runnings, an artist comes forward with a great album. Within a matter of months, he's got three albums available. So here's Don Carlos, original member of Black Uhuru, and what a talent. Flacko Palmer put out his first album 'Suffering' in early 1982. This album is produced with the same care and attention to detail using a superb mixture of experience and youth that Negus Roots brings to all its releases. Don responds accordingly with nine great songs.
Don Carlos & Gold - Then Never Know Natty Dread Have Him Credential - Hitbound - 1982
After working with Negus Roots and Henry Junjo Lawes, Don and Gold found themselves inside the studio at Channel One working with Niney the Observer, who had become in-house producer for the studio during the early eighties. Some of the tracks on this album appear on Junjo's 'Day To Day Living' set. Yet Niney's production style is so different, and the songs are so good that it matters not. A truly great album including big hit like the title track and 'Dice Cup'.
Don Carlos & Gold - Spread Out - Burning Sounds - 1983
Not quite sure where this release fits into the early eighties puzzle od Don Carlos & Gold releases, but fit it must. Produced by Bunny Lee, this album was released as 'Pass The Lazer Beam'. In terms of quality of vocal and lyrics its well up the standard of the of their other albums. What really sets it apart are the rough and tough dancehall rhythms Bunny has put together here. Then just to make it even more interesting the whole set is given a very well forward bass and drum mix.
Don Carlos & Gold - Never Run Away - Kingdom - 1984
Produced by Roy Cousins, this album finds Don and Gold in good form with plenty to say. A good mixture of love songs and reality; cultural songs, which is where the duo always sound at their best. That's not to say that they have any trouble writing or singing love songs as the first side of this album proves. Roy's production style is solid, but with enough lead instrumentation to keep it interesting. Recorded at Harry J and Channel One with a wide variety of musicians.
Don Carlos & Gold - Plantation - CSA - 1984
This showcase album from Don produced by Roy Cousins is just as good as the 'Never Run Away' set. The six tracks found this album feature the same set of musicians and it was recorded at Channel One by Peter Chemist and mixed at Harry J by Sylvan Morris; probably during the same time as the 'Never Run Away' album. The same mix of songs are present, and once again Roy Cousins shows his productional skills by bringing in a new form of percussion and some well played fuzzbox guitar work.
