Sonia Pottinger - Dancing Down Orange Street - High Note
There had been woman producers in reggae music before Mrs Pottinger, and there have been a few who came after her, but none have had the success of Mrs P.
Her High Note and Gayfeet labels had tremendous success in the rock steady era with a wide range of artists.
Some of them carried on Dancing Down Orange Street when the reggae era arrived.
This set is a very rare album even though it was released in the UK. And from what I understand it even won her a award in Jamaica from Swing Magazine.
You would think an album like this would be something she would have kept available for a long time, but sadly this is not the case.
Her major artists in the reggae era were Delano Stewart who is present with his massive hit ‘That’s Life’ and ‘Tell Me Baby’.
Also present is Delroy Wilson who should have had an from Highnote, but didn’t. Oddly the Hippy Boys are not here, but the Soul Rhythms are! it’s a great album, not totally reggae - but that is something else again.
