Luie Lepki - Late Night Movie - JGM - 1981
Most dj’s tend to brag and boast about whatever subject they are on. Not so Luie Lepki.. He was one of a small band of dj’s who actually sounded sad, or if not sad, highly emotional about the themes they deejayed about. Take the title track, in the course of 3 or so minutes he creates a detailed backdrop to watching a late night movie. It’s the same with ‘She’s A Part Of My Life’. It’s a highly detailed loving account about how he feels about his woman. ‘Custom Officer’ picks up on a similar theme with it’s plea to the Customs to leave the higgerlers alone. The rhyhtm are classic Joe Gibbs. but it’s Luie who makes this set with a style that is virtually unique.
Luie Lepki - Willie Red - Hitbound - 1982
Niney the Observer's stay at Channel One in the early eighties was a very fruitful one. Most people remember the Sugar Minott set 'With Lots Of Extra', but his work with DJ's Luie Lepki somehow got overlooked. Yet the simple truth is that this album is every bit as good as Sugar's classic set. With the Roots Radics on rhythms, and Soljie laying the rhythms and then Scientist mixing them, you couldn't really put together a better team. Probably the late Luie Lepki's greatest work.
