Another amazing character , engineer/producer
Lynford Anderson spent some working time at the
United Nations in the United States. If only the UN
knew what talent they had in their ranks. Perhaps
they did?
It all started with 'Pop A Top' a massive reggae hit
in 1969. This is classic proto-dub. And was one of
many tunes recorded in this fashion by the man. It
seems that Lloyd Charmers played organ on this
and it was arranged by Clancy Eccles. When you
have people like that in the studio - its not really a
surprise that you end up with something so special
- it more or less defines reggae for some people including
myself.
Andy Capp's mixing skills are up there with the
greats and he was doing it in the late sixties. This
tune made such an impact, it was one of the first to
go into version.
The main cut is Derrick Morgan 'Fatman', then 'Pop
A Top' from Andy Capp. Next up was Val Bennett
(who blew his baritone sax over all the big hits of
the era) with 'Poppy Show' and yet another popular
cut is Dennis Alcapone 'Pop A Version' And
there are more - version excursion for the first time!
He followed the success of 'Pop A Top' with 'The
Law' which was just as big and wilder in style! Its
bass is still a wonder after these years. While on the
'Law - Part 2' the record is speeded up and slowed
down in fine style. Andy Capp - a true innovator!
