Harry J - The Return Of The Liquidator - Trojan
Over the years what people think happened in a certain era compared to what acutally happened change.
Harry J as a reggae producer had as many hits as Leslie Kong, more than Lee Perry - but like Leslie Kong is not really rated. Some truly great music here first of capturing the spirit and energy of those times in Instrumentals. 12 of them.
And then into the vocals. And a few more instrumentals including the horn cut ‘Liquidator’ from Val Bennett called ‘Tons Of Gold’. Just as good is fantastic music from The Beltones, Eric Frater, Tony Scott, Bob Andy and The Cables.
Harry J was never given a V/A album back in the reggae era. He got his own label from Trojan, but no V/A set.
They did however release an instrumental set called ‘The Liquidator’ the first 12 tracks on this set are that album. It’s a very good selection - Harry J, like Harry Mudie favoured the sound of Studio One for his production, but you would never guess. The rest of the CD concentrates on the vocalists who worked for Harry mentioned above.
