Steely & Clevie – Dubbist – Prestige Elite
'Versionist' would be a better title for this album. Dub is not what this album is all about.
It might be only 8 tracks but it truly captures the spirit of Steely and Clevie!!!
The sleevenotes tell a very interesting story they first met on the sessions for Hugh Mundell's 'Africa Must Be Free' album that was recorded at Black Ark..
They began trying to get King Jammy interested in the digital sound in the early eighties – but he wasn't interested – until he got an a massive hit with Wayne Smith's 'Sleng Teng' Steely & Clevie didn't play on that, but Jammys had not forgotten them. And so they went on to become the digital rock that Jammy built his success on in the mid-eighties.
They went on to form there own label in the late eighties – and had a great deal of success. This however as got nothing to do with this album.
This gem was produced by Ossie Thomas one of the men behind the Black Solidarity label.
It probably crossed the mind of Steely and Clevie many times to release a set like this – but never got around to it thankfully Ossie Thomas did.
Recorded at many studios in Jamaica and at A Class in the UK. Its a collection of rhythms that find the pair in fine form. Not dub. Not instrumental, but a nice selection of rhythms in
version!!!
