Papa San – Pray Fi Dem – Ujama
Only Prince Jazzbo could up with a slack but very commercial sounding deejay album! But Jazzbo in talent spotting mode – knew the potential of Papa San – its just that an album featuring a truly slack 'Football Match' probably wasn't the best way to go with San. But thankfully that is just one of a great selection of tunes on this well produced Jazzbo set. His minimal rhythms work well with the lyrics that Papa San comes up with. 'Pray Fi Dem' is more like it Its a shame that producer and deejay never did more work together – but the same could be said of Jazzbo and Perry.
Papa San – Fire Inna Dancehall – King Dragon
By the early nineties the rhythms were going into a state of flux. This Pipper production is a very good indication of that. Traditional rhythms but without to much of a spark. Papa San works them well going back to themes like 'DJ School' where some great DJ's who are all but gone and forgotten – get name checked. Whatever happened to Pants and Sonny? Other highlights would be the title track and 'Nickname' Its a really nice album – just a shame those rhythms were just a bit more sharper.
Papa San – The System – Munich.
More or less a best of selection from the Germany based company. Pulling together a load of tracks from his career – including one of his really big hits that he did for producer Gussie Clarke 'Dancehall Good Fe We'. Every track on the album goes into a dub – which is a good idea for CDs. You want to fill the CD up this is the way to go. The title track is a great reality DJ tune – one of the best - up there with the likes of I Roy and Big Youth. Which is where Papa San is anyway – at least of his generation. Fast Style – Nuff Lyrics who could want more!!!
