"Calvin Cameron/Wareika Hill Sounds – Honest Jon's Records
When it comes to the trombone – just like the melodica in reggae music something good always seems to happen – it brings out the best in people.
In the sixties it was Don Drummond, in the seventies it was Rico and Vin Gordon Its been a bit of a wait -but now its the turn of Calvin Cameron to come forward. This set features a trombone over a Nyahbingi set of rhythms tracks. For lovers of the drums of Count Ossie and Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus. This is the next step and in a strange way goes right back to the afro/jazz roots of reggae music – when man like Don Drummond and Rico used to sit in with Count Ossie. Of course no albums exists of those sessions up in the Warikia Hills – back in the sixties. But the idea was a good one – and so all these years later – we have an album that celebrates the drum and the trombone. And this is not just about tradition. The sound they get sometimes is very close to Rhythm and Sound – its got an electronic feel that is hard to describe. It could be a mixing thing. But to hear that with the drums and the trombone is something else. Lots of players of instruments on this set – a great work.
