Melodians - Sweet Sensation - Island
The Melodians sound was not collected together on an album, so much of their work became very hard to get hold of. Finally thIs major injustice was corrected by Island Records in l980, with the release of 'Sweet Sensation' containing 8 classic tracks, from the reggae/roots era' s.
Brent Dowe, Tony Brevett, Trevor McNaughton, and the one called R,Cogle who seemed to be the song writing Melodian!
This set for producer Leslie Kong is a classic, it might be only 8 tracks but with tunes like ‘Sweet Sensation’ and ‘Rivers Of Babylon’ it contains two massive reggae hits and I think in the case of ‘Sweet Sensation’ a lower chart pop hit.
They also recorded for Duke Reid, Sonia Pottinger and Coxsone, just before, during and after the reggae era but its this sound of Beverleys with The Melodians that gives most people a thrill or even a sweet sensation!
The other tracks are equally as good, a good mixture of loves and cultural messages with ‘Lets Give Praise And Thanks’ being outstanding.
Although ‘Rivers Of Babylon’ remains there most well known in this theme. And rightly so. It seems they spent a lot of time recording that tune - with well over ten takes - before they got it right. And they certainly did!
