Jazz Jamaican – Skaravan – Hannibal
Reggae music got itself in a terrible state in the early nineties – most of the time you couldn't even be sure you was listening to reggae music!
Out of nowhere came an UK instrumenal band with the great name of Jazz Jamaica – just the name alone cheered me up. Then like so many others I started to go to their shows.
It was an incredible experience here was a band who could play Ska just like the records!!
The line up included Rico Rodgiguez – trombone, Clifton 'Bigga' Morrison on keyboards, Eddie 'Tan Tan' Thornton on trumpet, Gary Crosby on bass, Alan Weekes – Guitar, Tony Uter on percussion, Kendrick Rowe – Drums, and Michael 'Bammie' Rose on Sax. Satch also played on percussion – along with the one Tony Uter!!
This CD the debut album from the band finds them at their very best. They rip into 'Peanut Vendor' 'Green Island' as well as cover Jazz tunes inna reggae-jazz style like 'Barbados' and the title track 'Skaravan' /'Caravan'
All this seems like a very long time ago now – but this album is more than just a great album. Its shows sometimes you have to go backwards to go forward!!! It was probably one of the first 'Mash Up' albums in that respect. It would have been nice if other bands would have come forward to provide us with the other great musical era's in this style – sadly it was not to be.
