Elroy Bailey – Red Hot Dub – Burning Sounds
Coming from Black Slate – Elroy aka Ras Bailey had a good knowledge of what works in a reggae band – but this is something else again.
For starters the dub aspect of this release is minimal. Its a well constructed instrumental reggae album with jazz overtones.
Its the sound that can be heard on many Studio One releases that came out in the late seventies and early eighties.
You can almost imagine Ernest Ranglin playing on this!
Its truly remarkable that a number of bass players. Errol Holt, Leroy Sibbles, Junior Dan, Family Man and now Elroy Bailey have all mage great albums.
Perhaps its because the bass is the true foundation of reggae music. And the understanding of it – creates great works.
Elroy to date as never followed this set up – hopefully he will. To my knowledge this album as never been re-issued.
And the reason for that is the low appreciation of instrumental albums from any era. No matter what the instrument.
Hopefully this set will gain a re-release which encourage Elroy to make another great album.
