Chico Chin – Reggae Trumpet Sounds – Upstairs Music.
Chico Chin first popped up on my musical radar some time in the late seventies. As noted in the sleevenotes Chico's as played with with all the big stars -including Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown.
He was also a member of the Rass Brass horn section who included Nambo Robinson on trombone and Dean Frazer on sax.
Producer Danny Brackenridge in keeping with so many other reggae producers as given Chico a wide range of tunes to play his trumpet over.
Some from the pop style 'Rain Drops Keep Falling On My Head' and 'T.S.O.P' nicely done. Although what reggae fans of the instrumental style want is something that explores the fantastic melodies present in reggae music.
And this is where Danny Brakenridge takes a different road to so many other producers – not for him a trumpet cut of 'Redemption Song' or 'No Woman No Cry'.
Danny digs out the 'You Can Get It' the Desmond Dekker/Jimmy Cliff hit. The trumpet horn solo is just the start for Chico – he rips into the tune with passion! 'Equinox' aka 'Drum Song' the Jackie Mittoo tune is also present..
This is what reggae fans want to hear!!! Blow Chico blow.
