Rico
Rico In Reggae Land - Pama
The subtitle to this set is ‘A Tribute To Don Drummond’ . Don was one of the first reggae superstar to pass. And a album like this Produced by Bunny Lee is a fitting tribute from another master of the trombone Rico. Rico was there right at the start of the music, alongside Don. When he came to the UK very early on he played a big part in getting the UK reggae scene off the ground.
This set though was a little different it was a selection of the latest and greatest Bunny Lee rhythms of the time - recorded and mixed in the UK. And what an album it is from beginning to end - its got that energy that can only be found in reggae of that era. The drums crash - the bass is bubbling, likewise the organ, while the rhythm guitar is going like a train - followed by a picking guitar that is wild.
All Rico had to do was blow his horn over these tracks for them to be good - but he does a lot more than that. His knowledge of jazz means he is able to put together little runs of other tunes turn them around and bring them into something else. He was really having a good time on these sessions and it shows!!!
