Sister Ignatius
Sister Mary Ignatius Davies, has died of a heart attack aged 81, she
was head of the Alpha boys' school in the island's capital Kingston.
Of short stature and light complexion, the Roman Catholic nun was born
in Kingston, and educated at Alpha academy, a girls' high school
attached to the boys' institution. From there, she joined the Sisters
of Mercy, and went to Alpha in her late teens as a primary teacher. By
the time Sister Ignatius became headmistress in the 1960s, there was
tenor saxophonist Tommy McCook, trombonist Don Drummond, and trumpeter
Johnny "Dizzy" Moore. In 1997, she received a distinguished community
service award from the Jamaica Observer. She is survived by her niece.
