Brushy One String – The King Of One String – Rise Up
When it comes to rule books, or books of rules. Jamaica does not respect them musically, without apology. So when it comes to Dancehall, if you want to hear it in an acoustic style. So be it. Sooner or later someone will come up with something.
Brushy – came forward in the early nineties. No one had heard of anything like ‘Chicken In The Corn’ Produced by Courtney Cole for Roof International It was so wild, it drew a lot of attention to him. Including the management of some major rock star. Who recorded an album with him.
That album was never released, and by 1994 he was working with Imaj. A label set up by Coco Tea. If Coco didn’t set it up, I know he was heavily involved in the label. It was a label that didn’t last very long, but in a very short time it released a lot of great music. One of them being ‘Run Satan Rub’ by Brushy One String – Produced by Rap Rose.
It’s very possible that Brushy recorded albums for Roof and Imaj, but the next time I came across him was this album released in 2010. ‘King Of The One String’ A fully acoustic set, which captures the wild nature of his style.
Building on this great work, Brushy began to tour, and played at the famous New Orleans Jazz Festival – where he mashed up the place in fine style. New Orleans is a music city, and is not easily impressed. If you can make your mark musically in New Orleans – you have more or less made it. All that is really lacking now is a chart hit. But Brushy (son of the late great Freddy McKay) knows nothing ever happens before it’s time. Forward Brushy Forward.
