Dobby Dobson - Strange - Pama
Dobby Dobson had a massive massive hit in the Rock Steady era with ‘Loving Pauper’ for Duke Reid. Yet by the reggae era he firmly in the Rupie Edwards camp.
In fact this is probably the first album production from Rupie Edwards - both Trojan and Pama released this set in the UK at the same time under different titles. ’That Wonderful Sound’ is the title of the Trojan release.
This is a fantastic set from both singer and producer. Dobby’s got the knack of taking other people’s songs and making them his own.
On here for example, he takes on ‘Crazy’ and he gives it a totally different vibe. The title track ‘Strange’ is another one. And I think is another country classic.
And its his choice of material that gives us a clue - to where he’s coming from vocally. Just like artists like Ken Parker - its country music, not soul or R&B that provide inspiration for Dobby.
On the rhythm side of things Rupie goes close to the Beverley’s sound for most of the album. And who could really blame him?
Would be good to see Rupie releasing this set with perhaps the addition of ‘Endlessly’ plus some instruments.
