Jackie Brown - Greatest Hits - TR International
In the mid-seventies Tony Robinson, or Prince Tony started to put a team of artists together (Singers, Groups & DJ's) that was to quickly take him to the top of the reggae producers league (if one were to exist). DJ's like U.Roy & Big Youth were his biggest successes. Yet away from the major labels - singers like Jackie Brown gave him quite a few hits, as the title of this album suggests. Jackie's real gift is his voice. Country styled with a touch of pain that could only come from living in Kingston, Ja.
Jackie Brown - Third World Children - Harry J
A much more varied album than the TR set, this one takes in the country sound, heard on music from the Justin Hines to the Twinkle Brothers, to a Wailers like backing that strangely suits Jackie's style very well. Harry J can produce very well when he puts his mind to it, he'll encourage a singer to sing something original, rather than just do covers, and with Jackie it works because the man can write as well as sing. However like so many of the great singers from that time, Jackie never got the break.
