There are not too many photos of Peter Metro around, so it was pretty exciting to go to the Gemini Club, where Metromedia was playing every Wednesday while Gemini was on Tour. Telling by the voice Peter could be a big bloke-probably a scar faced one, but surprise, surprise he is a slick young man, who could be described with the same words his brother Squiddly Ranking has been described by somebody "Too Good Looking For His Own Good". He has got brown lively eyes, a thin moustache and dark skin, he moves like a supe. Speaking Spanish so fluently he made us wonder if he really had some Spanish blood in his veins...
The atmosphere and the vibes at the vibes at the Gemini Club were just terrific. Metromedia had spotted a nice gap to fill in the dance market. On Wednesdays there are fewer dance than in the weekends, and the central location of the club in Halfway Tree road attracts to it a lot of people both audience and performers. Peter Metro himself plays a very important role in creating the the good vibes in the dance.
One Wednesday he had something else to do and the night was kind of slow and lacking the punch Peter usually added just be turning the knobs of the amp or deejaying or maintianing order among the performers queuing for the microphone. He made the artists do their best and audience bawl: Forward ! Or Bo Bo Bo!
While chatting with Peter Metro and his sparring partner Zu Zu we learned a few facts. The start for Peter's career was quite typical. He used to do some welding (yes!) till after having grabbed the mike in the dance a few times he noticed that people got wild about him. So decided to be a Deejay.
He had a name and everything ready: Peter Ranking. However it turned out that there was already a deejay by that name. So he had to think of another. He was employed by a man called Jimmy who owned the sound Metromedia, so why not Peter Metro. He kept the name Peter, because it is his own name, Peter Clarke. It was Peter's little brother Squiddly who could use the 'Ranking' title, attached to his first name, as there was no argument about that.
How about this Spanish business then? They taught him that at school, the man is throughly Jamaican. "I visited a Spanish speaking country and it occurred to me that I could make a song in Spanish" There is a song coming in pure Spanish called 'Calypso'. Peter thinks that a deejay should not only entertain but also educate people. "It's not difficult to make lyrics that just rhyme properly - went downtown, met Fanny Brown - but to make lyrics that make sense and people learn something from them, it's different. Take lyrics like 'Metric Connection' from which you can learn the units of the metric system."
