Lascelles Perkins - Real Gone Clown - Coxsone - Worlddisc - 1960
Another great Jamaican singer - who could easily pass as a vintage R&B singer. It must have given Coxsone a real buzz to be able to make tunes like this. Never mind what was going in the U.S. Jamaica still loved the heavy drop of these shuffle beat rhythms - this one like so many others as got the lot - triplets on the piano - and a sax solo towards the end. Lascelles vocal is perfect - the song may have been a cover - yet all that matters is that the man puts everything into it.
Lascelles Perkins - Forever Together - Coxsone - All Starts - 1960
A truly extraordinary tune combining together R&B/Shuffle Beat/Jazz. Lascalles is another singer like Jackie Edwards - who could create a feeling from another time. This other time would be the late forties/early fifties - and the place any of the big cities of the US. Of special interest is the harmonies - female harmonies have not always been successful in reggae music or worked as well as they should have done, but there are no problems here. Some really nice guitar work as well - probably Ernest Ranglin!
Lascelles Perkins - Creation - Coxsone - Worldisc - Blue Beat
The creation story set to a mento rhythm/shuffle beat rhythm - and what a tune it is!!!
Trying to get the history of the world on record in less then 3 minutes was always going to be a challenge! Very few people get to tell it over a rhythm like this. And Lascelles rises to the challenge. The song is sung in a mento style as well. Lascelles could have given it a more jazzy feel if he wanted - but this way really works very well. Wild!
