Earl Sixteen - Song For A Reason - Wambesi
After his debut album for Mikey Dread, Earl Sixteen seemed to disappear for a while. When he returned he worked with a variety of producers including Ranking Joe & Jah Screw, Earl Morgan, Coxsone and Roy Cousins. Earl gave Coxsone some big sellers including 'Love Is A Feeling'. Yet it was Roy Cousins who went on to make some of the best music with Earl, including this LP. Which is one of Earl's best sets, and contains great songs like the title track, 'Keep Sailing' 'Good People' and the thoughtful 'Hey Girl'.
Earl Sixteen - Shining Star - Vista
With records like 'Cheating' for Lee Perry and 'Malcolm X' for Derrick Harriott, Earl was known as a singer/songwriter. This 5 track showcase LP for the Heptones' Earl Morgan shows once again just how good he is at songwriting given the chance. On this set you will find 'Jah Making Plans', one of his best records that features some stunning horn arrangements. The remaining 4 tracks all have a certain style that really comes from good songs. He's got something, to say, and wants you to listen.
Earl Sixteen - Not For Sale - Next Step - 1993
Every album has got a story behind it, it's just that when you know the story very well, it can be hard to keep it apart from the end result. Which is good, but knowing the story pretty well, it could have been, and would have been a lot better if the real producer of this LP - John Mason - had been given all the support that it needed to make a successful LP. Earl Sixteen's singing is well on form, and so is his choice of songs. Including a recut 'Changing World'. The rhythms work well, so what's wrong- That's a long story!
