Val Bennett - Selection
Val’s baritone sax graced many a great instrumental in the reggae era. ‘Return Of Django’ for Lee Perry is one and the sax cut of ‘Liquidator’ is another.
‘Django’ alone should have been enough to warrant a solo album at that time, but the reggae era is full of these kinda strange omissions.
Val worked with Bunny, Lee Perry, Andy Capp,
Clancy Eccles and even cut a tune for Studio One.
All of this should have turned into something more than some great singles, but it didn’t.
Perhaps it was the big hit, a massive pop chart hit ‘Return Of Django’ that did it. You should be able to retire after something like that, but Val of course didn’t.
Much later in the late seventies Bunny Lee stepped in and released a album credited to Val Bennett and The Upsetters, it wasn’t course anything to do with the Upsetters. But it was a reminder to people of something that should have been.
Hopefully someone will put together a selection based on this man’s work. Val deserves that totally.
