Earl 'Chinna' Smith – Sticky Fingers – Third World – 1977
Bunny Lee's production line producing might have great appeal to some people, but it means that when Bunny likes the idea of an instrumental album from 'Chinna'....
Chinna knows what to expect – and so do the fans of Bunny Lee!!!
Bunny will just pull out all his current productions – in this case late to mid – to seventies rockers rhythms and let Chinna do the work on them.
Which means you are not going to get weird sounding soul or funk tunes – or jazz tunes which have appeared on Chinna's own self produced albums on his High Times label.
Perhaps it would have been nice for Bunny to dig back into his rock-steady or reggae catalogue – but would you end up with a better album than this?
What you get is Chinna playing over standards like 'A Love I Can Feel', 'Never Let Go' 'The Hands Of Time' coming from tunes from artists like Johnny Clarke, Cornell Campbell and a few others who were recording for Bunny in the late seventies.
Towards the end of the album though a few 'Steppers' rhythms appear – they sounded different then – and they still sound like that today!!!
A great set – something that producer and artist should be proud of.
