Pablove Black – Mr Music Originally – Studio One - LP
Pablove Black or Pablo Black was first heard playing on the 'Message' album for Prince Buster - he wasn't credited on the album – so it took a while for this info to be known – but that seems to be starting point – for this remarkable keyboard player.
Jackie Mittoo was the main man at Studio One – for keyboards – but he didn't have no interest in the Melodica – and the Melodica carried the swing in the seventies – Augustus Pablo, Glen Brown, Joe White, Bobby Kalphat – all released great works – featuing the melodica as the lead instrument.
Coxsone knew what he needed for his label – step forward Pablove Black.
Pablove Black's melodica playing is faster than any of the above players. The melodies become more complex – and he does a very good job following the original vocal melody.
The opening tracks are all versions of well known tunes – Alton Ellis, Burning Spear etc.
Then towards the end – the album changes – with much more jazz flavoured reggae rhythms coming forward. Its then that Pablove reaches for his synth or clavinet. Great works!!!
A follow up album appeared on Studio One white label featuring Pablove on Clavinet alone . Perhaps one day....
