Mighty Jamma – Reggae Pan Classics – Hearts Aglow Records
The late great Selwyn Bapiste was the first man who I came across playing pans over a reggae rhythms. His version of 'Montego Bay' remains a great favourite from the days of the reggae era.
Since then – the steel pan as been an instrument that as not been heard in reggae music. To my knowledge only the Mystic Red Corporation have used it in there productions.
So its great to come across the Mighty Jamma a Trinidad based pan player with a great love for reggae music.
In Jamaica – Mighty Jamma might have been presented with a dozen rhythms that would include 'Real Rock' 'Heavenless' and 'Never Let Go' to work out on.
Yet the world see's reggae music from a different angle. And so here on this set you will find versions of 'One Love', 'Help Me Make It Through The Night' 'I'm Still In Love' and 'Kingston Town' - all very popular made famous by Bob Marley, John Hold, Alton Ellis and Lord Creator and in that order.
The rhythms tend to be the 'thump' of the one drop style made popular by Fatis. But its the pans of the Mighty Jamma that really nice up this album. The melodies are super sweet. Recorded in Trinidad at Lion heart & Jam Inn Studio and produced by Phil Stewart. A great work!
