Bobby Digital
V/A - Flag Flown High - Maximum Pressure
Bobby kicked off his production work in the
late eighties, but he really got going in the
early nineties. This set joins together the two
concepts very well. Late eighties Dancehall
with early nineties Roots. Garnett Silk opens
up the set - and he should. Bobby’s work
with that late great talent was always
excellent. Morgan Heritage, push on from
that point. While tracks from Cocoa Tea and
Admiral Tibet connect both era’s up. it’s a
shame that Bobby is not releasing that much
today - his production values are much
needed.
Bobby Digital - Documentary - VP
Jammys made such a big impact back in 1985 - you just knew even then that - a number of people would take it even further.
No one producer could handle all that talent.
Jammy explains it very well in this documentary - he went looking for Bobby - it wasn't Bobby coming to him looking for work.
Bobby it seems was a very fast learner - cutting dub came naturally to him, and so then did studio work.
When he finally set up his own studio in the late eighties he was able to tap into the Jammys camp.
Shabba Ranks was his first major success. Although Shabba moved between three camps - Jammys, Gussie, and Bobby's - making great music with each and every one of them.
Bobby's productions seemed to have more of an edge.
When Shabba was signed to Epic - Bobby became involved in the production process.
It looked like the major labels had finally learned their lesson regarding production.
That turned out to be wishful thinking.
Still, Bobby trod on - and it wasn't long before he connected up with Garnett Silk.
Garnett had everything a great voice, great songwriting skills - and even had more people writing songs for him.
All he needed were some great rhythms and great rhythms are were not a problem for Bobby Digital.
The 'It's Growing' album released in 1993 -- is one of the best albums in reggae music - it ranks alongside albums like The Wailers 'Catch A Fire' It wasn't just a new album - it was an event!
When Garnett died it was a big shock to reggae music. Bobby trod on though to higher heights working with Morgan Heritage and then Sizzla.
He also produced so many more great albums. Bobby passed in 2020, he will be sadly missed.
