Chuck Foster – California Dubbin – Catch Me Time – 2016
Many many years ago – Augustus Pablo told me about a sound track that he did for the 'Rockers' film. Pablo was very proud of it. It remains to this day unreleased. However it can be heard if you dig around.
What it is, is a fifth rockers sound. Channel One, Joe Gibbs Bunny Lee, and Lee Perry all created there own sounds within the rockers era. Pablo's sound was different again, but the sound of this soundtrack was even more different. Tommy Cowan locked onto the sound for releases on Talent and Arab.
It was more a more textured rockers sound. Some 40 years later – Chuck Foster and Mike Irwin working out of Rough Sounds in Redondo Beach have brought forward this sound again.
Trying to get a good dub sound is not easy anywhere in the world. What Tubby and Co did back then was to make something very complex look very easy.Re-creating a sound like this 'Rockers' by design or by accident – deserves total praise!!!A tremendous dub set – 15 tracks. A very well produced work.
Catch Me Time - All Stars - Gotcha Covered - Catch Me Time
A truly remarkable album. Trying to update old reggae standards is never easy - Tunes like 'I'm Still In Love With You Boy' recut here by Empress Akua is up there with the original. Likewise the recuts of 'Uptown Top Ranking' here from the Universal Speakers are beyond recuts. Ras Sal Naverette is a talented youth - but seeing his name beside 'Police And Thieves' made me wonder - but this tune is even better than the original. Nuff respect also to Chuck Foster for 'Twelve Gates To City' - it sounds like an old gospel tune - and the man sings it with such feeling. Finally the presence of Jah Mali recutting an old Dennis Brown - 'Ababa Jon Hoy' and Ranking Joe deejaying a cut of 'Uptown Top Ranking' is something else. A perfect blend of JA and LA talent. A superb album!!
Chuck Foster - Love Foundation - Catch Me Time
The Singer/Songwriter is am important tradition in any form of music. It tells you a lot about the form of music - reggae music is rooted in protest. And if it's not protesting, its about history or mystery. Of course there are other subjects - love being one, but all musics take an interest in that subject. Reggae music works best when it's got something to say. Great songs like 'New Dream' and 'Maybe Tomorrow' are sung with great feeling - they are are link to people like Joe Higgs, Justin Hinds, Leonard Dillion. It's the folk tradition. And this is what this album is all about. It's also got some great rhythms and production - built at Rough Sounds by Chuck Foster and Mike Irwin. And featuring both them and Alberto Fernanadez, Rex Bailey on guitars, Tony Bird on Keyboards, Todd Johnson on trumpet and Horseman on drums. An excellent set.
